Final Journey of Delhi Gang-Rape Victim in Pictures; Body of India's Braveheart Cremated [PHOTOS]

The cremation of the young physiotherapy gang-rape victim was a low-key affair, with the government taking control and ensuring minimum public participation and publicity. The general public was kept out, as the woman’s mortal remains were consigned to the flames at a Dwarka crematorium within hours of the arrival of the body from Singapore early this morning.
The 23-year-old victim had breathed her last at a Singapore hospital on Saturday, after a 13-day battle for life following the brutal assault on her by six persons in a moving bus on December 16.
In keeping with the general public outrage over the assault, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were themselves present at the Palam Technical Area of the Indira Gandhi International Airport when the body arrived by a special Air India aircraft around 3-30 a.m.
The two leaders also interacted with the parents of the victim who had accompanied the body. Thereafter, a large number of policemen escorted the body to the victim’s residence and later to the crematorium. Several barricades were put by the police near the victim’s residence to prevent ordinary citizens from joining the mourning. The policemen asked the victim’s neighbours to stay away from her house where some rituals were being performed. The restrictions continued even after the body was taken to the crematorium.
The anger that has gripped the country following the incident resonated in the locality with neighbours joining the chorus demanding “strictest possible punishment” to the accused.
“When she left home the last time, little did her father know that she would return here as a corpse. It is not about a girl from our locality who has fallen prey to this barbaric act, it’s about the safety of women in general,” an emotional neighbour said.
The neighbour said his younger brother had tutored her while she was in school. ``Because she was focussed, her father decided to sell his land and mortgage their house to arrange for her educational expenses.’’
Those present at the crematorium included mostly family members and relatives of the deceased. The electronic media was not present as Broadcast Editors' Association had asked news channels to refrain from covering the funeral. Union Minister R.P.N. Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Member of Parliament Mahabal Mishra and Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta were among those present at the cremation.
Though the body reached the crematorium around 5-45 a.m. and was put on the pyre by 6 a.m., the victim’s father only lit it at around 7-30 a.m. as the family members protested against the police rushing them and trying to get the cremation done even before sunrise. The area was fortified with a large number of policemen and members of the Rapid Action Force in anti-riot gear guarding the area and keeping a close vigil.

Samsung Galaxy Camera Review

For the past few years we have been waiting for a functional Android camera, something that we deem to be “unavoidable”, so we were very glad to see Samsung launch its Galaxy Camera at IFA in Berlin in September. One of the previous attempt was released by Polaroid at CES 2012, however the design was far from being good enough, and much needed to be improved (design, performance, optics, Android version…).

President’s son Abhijit Mukherjee sorry for ‘dented-painted’ remarks

Kolkata: President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit has kicked up a row by making sexist remarks in connection with the anti-gang-rape protests in Delhi and elsewhere.

Abhijit – an MP from Jangipur – said it was fashionable for women to take part in protests.

He said ‘highly dented and painted’ women first go to discotheques and then turn up for protests against the Delhi gang-rape. According to him, most of these women are not connected to ground realities.
"Those who are coming in the name of students in the rallies, sundori, sundori mahila (beautiful women), highly dented and painted," Abhijit told a vernacular news channel.

"Giving interviews in TV and showing off their children. I wonder whether they are students at all," he said, adding, "What's basically happening in Delhi is something like pink revolution, which has very little connection with ground realities."

However, Abhijit later withdrew his 'dented-painted' remarks and said they were not meant to hurt "any particular section or any particular sentiment".

Even his sister Sharmistha expressed "utter shock and anguish" and apologised on his behalf.

"I express my utter shock and anguish. I really apologise to every women, man and every sensitive person in this country... I am utterly shocked and only thing I can say is that I really apologise on his behalf... I am quite surprised with what my brother said," Sharmistha said.
Asked whether Abhijit should apologise for his words, she said, "I completely agree. He should immediately apologise.

"Not only as a President's son, but as any sensitive man, he should not have made this kind of statement. Forget about being a political leader, it shows a certain degree of insensitivity... My family is not like that," she said.

The gang-rape of a para-medical students on December 16 had evoked massive outrage with students in huge numbers staging protests in the capital. Some of them even turned violent and led to clashes between police and protesters.

Sheila Dikshit blames unbridled influx of migrants for Delhi's woes

New Delhi: Identifying "unbridled influx" of migrants into Delhi as a major challenge, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday blamed the burgeoning population for putting existing infrastructure under strain and sought help from the Centre to deal with the situation.

In her address at 57th meeting of the National Development Council, Dikshit said the national capital was grappling with "unparalleled and unprecedented" challenges and cited continuous influx of people from across the country as a major cause of concern.

"Delhi's burgeoning population trend is further exacerbated by the continuous and unbridled influx of people from all over the country. Higher wages, better educational and health care facilities, more employment opportunities are some of the factors responsible for the continuous influx," she said.
Acknowledging the contribution of the migrants in evolution of an "eclectic culture" in the city, Dikshit, however, said the ever increasing population has put enormous pressure on housing, sanitation, power, water, sewerage, solid waste management, public health and transport system.

"The proliferation of private vehicles and consequent clogging of roads is another problem that shows no trend of abatement," she said emphasising the need for brining an innovative multi-model transport system for the city at the "earliest".

"Being the capital city of India, making Delhi an environmentally sustainable habitat and a global heritage city as envisaged in the 12th Plan is a national desideratum and calls for huge resources and massive effort," Dikshit added.

Database with rape convicts’ photos to be prepared

New Delhi: Amidst outrage over the brutal gang-rape of 23-year old girl in the national capital, the government has recently announced a slew of measures for the safety and security of women. Keeping in line with the same, the government said on Thursday that a national data base with photographs of all rape convicts will be prepared.

Minister of State for Home RPN Singh said he has directed the National Crime Records Bureau to prepare a directory of all rape convicts and upload their photographs, names and addresses on its website.

"We are planning to start it in Delhi. Photographs, names and addresses of the rapists will be uploaded on Delhi Police website also," he told reporters here.

Singh said that subsequently the plan will cover all states and Union Territories and websites of state police forces will carry photographs, names and addresses of the rape convicts.
Modalities for preparing the data-base are being prepared and the NCRB website will be ready with the photographs, names and addresses of the rapists in a few months.

"We are very serious to deal with the problem and taking all possible action as early as possible," Singh said.

The para-medical student was raped in a moving bus in South Delhi by six men and then subjected to brutal violence. She had been fighting for her life at Safdarjung Hospital for the past 10 days and was subsequently shifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore last night.

Government has already set up a Commission of Inquiry to identify lapses and fix responsibility for the December 16 gang-rape case and also constituted a committee of jurists for reviewing the existing laws to provide speedier justice and enhanced punishment in cases of sexual assault.

Meanwhile, protests have been going on in Delhi mostly by students demanding stricter laws for rapists.

Priyanka Chopra disappointed about Barfi! losing out in the Oscar race

While the babe is super sad about Barfi! not making it to the final nine at the Oscars, director Anurag Basu is quite unaffected by the jury’s verdict
Priyanka Chopra and Anurag Basu are at least reacting to the news of Barfi! not being shortlisted, but Ranbir Kapoor has been totally missing from the Oscar brouhaha. We haven’t heard much from him yet. Priyanka Chopra on the other hand is quite disheartened as Barfi! didn’t make it to the nine shortlisted films. Basu is content with the fact that his film was at least India’s official entry to the Oscars. He has been reacting to the whole issue in a very professional and calm manner.

But why is the Chopra chick sulking so much? She’s either super ambitious or she’s in no mood to get off her high horse and get out of that ‘getting nominated for la-di-da international awards’ mode (remember she has also been nominated for the World Music Awards).

Looks like someone has to jolt the babe out of her sad state, any takers?

Gang-rape protests turn violent

Mass protests against the gang-rape of a young woman turned violent, leaving scores injured, including one policeman in critical condition, and turning the India Gate area into a virtual war zone. Police and paramilitary personnel liberally used batons and tear gas to chase away thousands after the emotionally charged protests during the day descended into chaos by evening.
